AMERICA MUST SUPPORT OUR MILITARY AND THEIR FAMILIES

Making sure that our military has the hardware necessary to keep America safe is a national imperative.  It is also clear that given the budget deficit issues we face, there is no good rationale for moving any aircraft carrier currently home-ported in Norfolk to Mayport, Florida.

However, just as important is making sure that we provide our active duty personnel, our veterans and our military families with the healthcare, mental health care and job opportunities that they deserve for the tremendous sacrifices they have made for us.

The injuries sustained by service members in our recent two wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, along with the extended and multiple deployments, are resulting in new challenges not faced by returning service personnel in previous military actions.  We as a nation must make sure that we are providing first-rate healthcare and mental health care for these brave men and women upon their return.  In addition, we owe them good job opportunities and a way to put the skills they have learned protecting us to good use in providing for their own families and building our economy.  The high unemployment rate currently existing for our veterans is a national disgrace and must be reduced.  We owe them and their families this and much more.  And by providing good jobs in Hampton Roads for those leaving the military, we can continue to grow our local economy.

I am eternally grateful for the service of our friends and neighbors.  We must honor and respect their service everyday by providing them with appropriate healthcare, mental health care and job opportunities.
